Hello Hello!

Hi there everyone! It has been a while. To make a long stoy as short as possible: there were some complications with the host company of the .com site. Due to these complications and no matter how hard i tried, who i talked to, and how hard i kicked and screamed about it... as of now, i do not have the domain name anymore. We are still working on updating the new .net site (the google search, music, & larger photos are not available quite yet...) but everything else is here! If you are interested in listening to some of my songs please visit my myspace page!

News: I have a show coming up Sat. February 21st at the Foggy Bottom. I have been saving up some new songs to play! And it should be fun :)

the rush summer

This summer has gone by faster than any other I can remember. This is a pattern. Each summer year after year feels as though it goes by a little quicker. Is this because three months continues to become a decreasing fraction of a growing age? And if that is true, I would have to argue that winter never skips and races by the way summer does. Winter waits, while summer takes, meaning: The summer is simply too much fun. Too many weekends away at the beach. Too many friends in town. Too many events to create, attend, or see. It is the best kind of time. The best kind of season. As much as I try to slow it all down, heels digging into the ground, I am happy, speeding straight into shorter days and an early fall. The faster it flys the more fun i've had and this has been a rush summer.

Just saw you in "...Crones" at Williamston Theatre. That show is really wonderful and all of you did a great job. I bought a copy of your CD and really enjoyed this song. I'm glad I got to see your video. Will you put any of the "...Crones" songs out on a CD? Brava, brava... I enjoy your work! :-)

SEEKING MUSICIANS!

Today i made an add on craigslist... it goes *roughly* like this: I need a drummer. I need a cellist... other instruments may apply...

so weather you are friend, fan, or a musician actively seeking a singer/songwriter to join up with and are hot on a graigslist trail... enjoy the music on the site.

In other unrelated news: i am currently trying to build up my children's music repertoire for the classroom! And am writing a song geared toward two-year-olds about sock monkeys!

And THANK YOU to all who made it out to the January 12th show! It was a really fun time. Thank you!

Assistant to the Environmental Services
Attention Deborah Solo bloggers it has come to my attention that my assistant has posted a message on this website. Pay absolutely no attention to it as he will always be #3, possibly #4. Furthermore, let it be known that I fully intend to take over the Fan of the Week and henceforth be known as the Super Fan of the Week. I will preside on my throne not for weeks, but for years. I will rule with an iron fist and not tolerate dissention.

GIG GIG GIG GIG GIG

Oh, yeah- the rumors are true- i now own a Ukulele. And yes, it will have its concert debut this Saturday!! I have no idea what i'll play... the only songs i've learned on it so far are, "The Wheels on the Bus," and "If You're Happy and You Know It."

Don't worry... i'll think of something.... else.

The show will feature the uke for one or two songs, original music, possibly including a new song, and one or two covers i've been working on (at least one by the Killers!)

please come! The show is

Saturday, Dec. 8

Deborah, 3 questions; 1. Does the Foggy Bottom Coffee House allow crowd surfing? 2. Will the Jan. 12th show feature an encore performance of Free Bird? 3. Would you perfer my demo vocals via MP3, CD, tape or 8-track? Mr. Collins promised me a front row seat, if I can get the Trans Am started I'll be there. Stay tuned for future correspondences, until then tell no one of this message.

Deborah Solo
First- i have always- always- wanted to recieve a secret, yet also extremely public, message. Answers: One. yes. Two. honestly... prob not... but yes- if you start the song and the whole crowd joins in, in a slow motion movie moment. Three. live (during your free bird solo). if not live, than all of the above will be fine. your secret is safe with me. PS Mr. Collins is a very reliable source, and front row will be yours. I'm routing for the Trans Am!!

Deborah, Guess what? I have flaws. What are they? Oh I donno, I sing in the shower? Sometimes I spend too much time volunteering. Occasionally I'll hit somebody with my car. So sue me-- no, don't sue me. That is opposite the point I'm trying to make. The point I'm trying to make is I think you and Mr. Collins should plan a duet for one of the upcoming shows. If this is a possibility I will require two front row seats
Friday, January 11, 2008
Mr Collins
I think if we were talking to the Assistant Environmental Services it would be different..but this is the Assistant "to the" Environmental Services?!? I think he should be shuned until further notice...or until he shows up Saturday night to start the Freebird encore.

CANCELLED

very bad and very sad news: woke up with a strangling-death-throat-cold, and can not sing. the show for tomorrow night (fri. nov. 9) is cancelled. I am very sorry about this because i'd much rather be performing... than doing almost anything else...

but good news: earlier in the week (Tuesday night) i wrote a new song! It's short. It's cute... maybe it's lovely....

next show isn't until Sat. Dec 8.

very sad.

thank you,

Deborah Solo

up and date.

It's true... i admit... i have not written a song since April. But that is to say, i haven't written a complete song... so let's hear it for the pieces and clips, lone choruses and lyricless melodies, that are substantial in their own fraction of a way! I mean, i might as well just frankinstien-slice these pieces together and say i've written something new. I've done this before.

Instead of writing original work, i'm spending my nights practicing "the Wheels on the Bus," and memorizing the chord progression for "the Alphebet Song" which is also the same exact progression that belongs to "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star," AND "Ba Ba Black Sheep." Which makes it triple worth my time to know.

more music to come soon.

tomorrow i will wait in line at the downtown borders to meet my idol! Wes Anderson! Best director/writer ever.

Ready to Miss Michigan.

Ready to Miss Michigan.

This morning i fell down the stairs. It was epic. Sliding down a story that landed me flat on my back. My butt! Such pain for 7 am. what a way to start the day....

and I'm looking for housing. Would i rather fall down the stairs......? no. i know.

It turns out my pledge to never stay in Michigan for another winter will have to be postponed... possibly never to materialize. It could be worse. It's not like i live in the tundra... but comeon, it is kind of 'like' the tundra.

Worries to come later- now it's July! Sunny summer. I didn't plan on staying. But now i can't (or don't want to try to) imagine leaving. My life is in Michigan, winter or not. My family is here, my boyfriend, my old friends, and my very loved job... I'd miss this and be miserable. So i elect to miss the sun for a season, find a sublet, and try to get the best demo done i am capable of. If California is in the picture it can still be there next year. This doesn't mean i won't be ready to drive across the country should i choose the very impulsive (very rock and roll star) move and go in the night without warning.... this doesn't count as a warning does it? Just kidding.

quick update

i'm getting ready for work now, busy all week- but last night i had an hour or so to sit with my guitar. Brian, my housemate of great musical taste, stuck his head into my room and asked, "Are you writing new songs?" and i explained i was just messing around, and he told me, "It sounds happier!"

my reaction- I AM happier!

so... happier sounding songs on the way... if i can pull it off.

Andrew Says

I decided to spray paint the CDs cream color. I wanted a deep cool red but they only had primary red and i'd rather have the wrong shade of cream than the wrong shade of red.

Andrew agrees, "Yeah i look at this CD and i think. probably a girl. probably a folk singer. this CD is like, 'hey, listen to me.' if you had the wrong red it'd be bad. Like a 45-year-old in stretch pants.... red stretch pants with stirrups...."

good thing i went with cream...

nerves and words.

i always said i wouldn't be one of those twenty-two year olds who freaks out on their birthday, or one of those seniors who freaks out on graduation. The birthday went by and i was a year older without ever thinking "oh my God. it's all over." (which is something a friend actually said to me at sight of first wrinkle.) I thought i'd breeze right through graduation. right on to the next great step. I even have a plan. I mean, a lack of a plan... a year off before i make a plan? I'll busy myself this summer with two jobs and when i get kicked out of Ann Arbor at lease end in August i'll live with "the 'rents" until my sister's wedding (YAY), still working, still saving, still writing, and recording.

Then (dun dun dah! the TOUR!) in the end of November i will travel the west coast, (hopefully hanging out with a few family members and friends over there!) while playing solo shows in various cafes/bars/book stores of various cities/towns/camp sites.... I can't come back to Michigan until winter is over or i get signed... and famous.... ;)

i will sell a few CDs and make a few donated dollars, but mostly i will spend for gas and living- i'm aiming for breaking even!

So the plan is set, but right now i am freaking out! I said i wasn't going to do it, but here it is happening. One more round of exams? It seems impossible. I'm nervous about the album. I'm nervous about my spelling... shit... it'll happen to you too younger ones- any huge transition is difficult to deal with when you can only anticipate it, weather it be something you need, want, or dread...

this is just something i'm filling space with so i don't have to finish my Spanish homework.

if anyone has good college graduation freak out stories you are welcome to post.

i know that when my brother graduated high school, his band had a party in our backyard, played a concert, and jumped in the pool totally naked....

song number 42 and 43.

Song Number 43.

"Tip of Your Tongue"

written April 7, 2007

you say you're losing sleep,

i only hope it's over me.

we were kissing in the street

it's April, It's still snowing

you only want me when you're drunk

and when i'm broken.

But you know i'm the name on the tip of your tongue

the one you just couldn't say, the one you just wouldn't love

i am the answer you can't remember,

i am the favor that you never asked for.

you know your lyrics were too literal

for me to understand

were you asking me to wait? were you asking me to dance?

well, no-

never, never, nevermind

i guess you're right sometimes

we are never more than just friends

or an accident that just keeps happening

you only love me when you're drunk,

and when i'm broken

because you know i'm the one on the tip of your tongue

the name you just couldn't say the one you just couldn't love

i am the password you can't remember

i am the favor that you're never goin' ask for

and you know i'm losing sleep

because i needed you next to me

and i guess i'd put up with anything

it's April, it's still snowing

it's April, and it's still snowing

Two weeks ago i wrote a short 'dittie' about Kenneth and his fabulous lifestyle of the 'Road Race!'

This is song number 42 for me, as far as i can tell, and it was the first song i wrote since October. What a dry spell. But 42 turned into 43 when last weekend i sat down and wrote something i'd been meaning to finish... or start... for far too long.

Song number 42.

"Road Race"

written March 24, 2007

you have five bikes

hanging from your ceiling in your bedroom

that's more bikes than people sleep there

that's more bikes than i think you could use

but you do....

at the ROAD Race, at the ROAD Race,

Bikes in space, it's a road race

at the ROAD Race, at the ROAD Race,

get first place, at the road race.

well don't put your eggs in one basket

if it breaks, across the sidewalk, crosswalk

don't hit a chipmunk

if you can avoid one

watch for pedestrians

and all the rest is common sense

repeat chorus until crowd participates and all are screaming.

Oh My GOD. Today i met Ben Folds.

Ben.

Folds.

That's why i work at starbucks! So i can meet famous musicians that have inspired me since the seventh grade. I mean, one time i served Doogie Howser a grande latte, but it meant nothing. I had to look up his real name on google. (for the record: Neil Patrick Harris) and i probably forgot to tell you about it! But, Ben Folds?! This is news. I'm telling everyone. I remember his music was probably the first GOOD music i listened to independently of my parents. And i've seen him in concert four times (twice with Guster there too!) and i never get to go to concerts.

here's what i've learned. He is a nice guy in person! As genuine as his music. And a great performer. And a fucking fantastic song writer.

Ben Folds if you should happen to follow that postit note to this website i credit you for being incredible! Everyone should own all your albums. (not an overgeneralization...) "Whatever and Ever Amen" is still my favorite.

AND ALSO FANS AND FRIENDS:

my new album is being release APRIL 19th

March Shows: Deep Red.

The show last Friday was so much fun! Here is the list of songs i performed with a drummer:

Loser

My Opinion of You

Idiot

Out of My System

So, What Now?

Aussie Song

and the list is growing. i also have a mind to go out and get a bassist of some sort. Any takers? comment wall....

I also ventured to play some old songs at the show (Over My Head, and Red Colors) and it was fun to get them back in the mix!

Special thanks to those who drove out- my family, close friends, housemates... classmates! It was a great sized crowd for an out of town show!

The rest of the weekend was filled with craziness- 'nough said- but i will report i did make it to all my classes last friday and plan to finish up proper. Graduation is soon. The Album is coming out sooner!

the title will be a surprise. but you won't be surprised. And i'm still taking suggestions if you want to post an idea!

cake plane.

how?

how will i carry myself to class tomorrow when we all have senior-idice and spring fever like you wouldn't believe. And on Friday- I hate to drag the metaphor out much longer than needed, but the symptoms are twice as bad as we aproach the weekend. therefore: the cure... get my ass off facebook and go to bed? stop watching "Y Tu Mama Tambien," and actually finish my real Spanish assignment? Maybe... i should at least put my clothes in the dryer...

the other day i actually said "whatev."

as if the 'er' was just too much effort.

where do i get this? Chase was right to call me out on it. "What, you're not saying the 'er' now? Please."

i know.

but, good night! wet clothes are moving out of the washer on to better things. see you at the show.........................? can't make it... whatevER :)

what happened to the weekend.

After st. Patrick's Day i realized that i'd left my only pillow in East Lansing. Genny please bring it back to me soon. I built a new pillow by folding a blanket into a pillow case (very industrious) but now i'm cold and need the blanket back.

this isn't important.

what is important is that Caitlin is home from Africa (welcome home!) and i got to see Genny and a few other old friends last weekend and the Kiwi has made it back into the car.

it is spring. right now. right? March 21st? shouldn't we be drinking or something? no, just studying.

the next show is Friday March 30th at the Foggy Bottom Coffee House (Dexter-Ann Arbor Rd.) and this is the only show for March so please come! Larry will be drumming with me again for half a set (and he will be kicking ass, as always.)

the show is 7:30pm-8:30pm

no cover.

more info. to come

Enjoy the spring!

Entry... no subject or questions.

I spent the last week adjusting back to Michigan weather from the week i spent in the sun soaked Los Angeles coast. Spring break comes in the middle of winter. No complaints here. A week off classes- i'll take it! I traveled to LA with my mom so that we could stay with my Granny. While we were there, my sister, brother, and Dad were all able to join. Also, we got to see our Aunt Gail, and cousin Mika! Other than a long hilarious incident of obtaining a clue boardgame and playing all the way through our jet lag, the trip was fairly mello and fantastic. I love my family very much.

Also, my friend Chase tells me he wants to persaude me to move to the coast 'the beautiful dellusion that is LA.' His place is right on the water. Consider me tempted.

How the Kiwi Fairs in February.

When I was in New Zealand, I bought a small stuffed Kiwi bird that has a squeak box inside. When you squeeze it, it chirps exactly like a kiwi bird, five chirps in a row in equal time and then two beats rest before the sixth chirp.

When it chirps I have to smile. Kiwi=Delightful.

I hooked it to my rearview mirror as soon as I got back to Michigan, and I challenge anyone to maintain active road rage while it's chirping. Impossible. Some ass hole cuts you off. Squeak the Kiwi. Slip on the ice. Squeak the Kiwi. Some ass hole keeps forgetting to call you back. Your Jane Austen book on CD is making you fall asleep. Your check engine light will not go off. So many reasons.

More often than not, I’m squeaking it for no reason. It's just along for the ride. And all my passengers love him! (My green Honda has many awful trademarks right now... the microphone stand that sits in the back seat. (Just push it to the side guys-) the thirty to fifty empty water bottles on the floor of the front passenger seat.) The Kiwi is easily the best thing.

But after the summer and fall and early winter would the Kiwi keep up with the cold? Frozen Car, Frozen Bird.

My housemates, Kenneth and Brian, were witness- today in the car the temperature was negative three and the kiwi couldn't sing. The pretty chirping was depleted to an exhausted and bitter squawk; the sixth and last chirp was a grunt. "It sounds pissed off." "Possessed." "On Crack."

After the bird warmed up, so did his chirp. Therefore, I’ve moved it into the house. No more rides until it warms up outside. I took its picture and posted it and wrote a blog about it. Just one more way for me to say- I can’t stand the winter.

Cheers.

Maybe Twenty.

Last night was the first show of the year. Good Start. About twenty close friends and family members made it out to Dexter for the show, which i appreciate greatly.

I scrambled a set list in the last seconds before show time and then switched it around completely at will as the show progressed. This worked out well enough, and i was able to live a literal dream i had of playing a cover of the David Bowie song "Starman." I didn't quite do Bowie justice, but i was told it was magical all the same.

I sold my last two copies of my The Girl in the Picture (which means i've let go of about 260 copies all together), and will have to get busy getting more copies before the next gig, because the next show will be my "Fourth Annual Valentine's (sucks) Show." (Usually the biggest crowd of the year! you should be there too...)

The show is set for 7:30pm, Saturday Febuary 10, 2007 @the Starbucks on the corner of State & Liberty. FREE.

Overall the show last night was high energy, lots of fun, and overall i'd say it was a bright and deep color teal.

(if a set list can have a color (and it does))

Thanks for coming guys,

Love

Deborah

Hello Kitty?!

New Years Eve is one of my favorite holidays. Its ending, begining, and kind of nothing, but most importantly the entire world is included in a twenty-four hour party of counting down, anticipation, singing and clapping.

At midnight my friend Max and I were pulling into the airport parking lot. We weren't there for a trip. We were there to rescue our two friends, Sarah and Emily. They came home to Ann Arbor on New Years Eve and were supposed to meet our friends and I at my house for a small party, but they called us at 11:30pm from the airport parking lot. After a long day of bad-weather delays, their car wouldn't start. (completely 100% sober) I decided we could drive to the airport and jump the car. We counted down to moutain time when we were finally home!

The party took place from about 2am to 6am, and the highlights were when each of my housemates made it back from various parties and places in varying states of sobriety (with stories.)

In the morning (around 1pm) i made Hello Kitty shaped waffles for everyone (exciting!) My sister gave me the Hello Kitty Waffle maker for Hanukkah. Delicious and... adorable...

Happy New Years.

home coming

My family all came home for Christmas and for Hannukah. (I know it's spelled Hanukkah, but I have always spelled it wrong, and it's hard to stop!)

The biggest news of all time is that my sister, Sharon, has just become engaged to her boyfriend Keiron! I want everyone reading this to understand that I. Am. SO. Excited!

Thrilled even.

yayayay!

Okay- beyond that though and to the music, I played a show December 16th and the amazing Whitney Mann joined me to perform. I was sad when she moved to Chicago, but now I’ve hit depressed that she's off to Colorado. First, I’m jealous because winter doesn't suck as much there and second because there is even less of a chance we'll get to play shows together soon. So congratulations to those who made it to the show on time and got to see Whitney's last Ann Arbor show for a while.

My voice hurt insanely that day, but the voice was there for the show, which was nice, because afterward I couldn't talk for two days... I still spoke of course, because I couldn't stop talking if my actual life depended I do so, but I sounded like horror.

I was coughing on the street and a bystander told me to go home and sleep. December cold.

That is the update of the new site. More to come.

Just wanted to add that today at work (starbucks) I was cleaning a shelf. And it collapsed. And china mugs (about five or six) fell and crashed along with the heavy wood shelf and it was the one moment in my life when fifty people all shut up and stared at me, without me wanted them to. I realized that my embarrassment level was only at about a 4 out of ten when I think it should have been at least an eight.

Nice work.

I was not held financially responsible for the mugs.

thank goodness.

Everyone please please listen to Of Montreal. they are AMAZING!

(Three times I’ve used that adjective. amazing.)
